SITTING AT JESUS’ FEET

A Devotional Lesson Taught by Linda Harper in Children’s Church

From Luke 10:38-42 The main points for this Sunday: Don’t be too busy to get to know your neighbor…and don’t miss God in our busyness – Jason Daggett, IVC Children’s Pastor

Thursday afternoon I read Luke 10:38-42. It’s the story of “Busy Bee Martha” and her sister Mary. When Jesus came to their house for a visit, Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen closely to every word He was saying.

All the while, Busy Bee Martha was buzzing around, here and there, trying to serve something to eat and something to drink to every guest in the house that had come to see Jesus. She was way too busy to quiet herself down, sit down, and tune in to what Jesus was saying!

Jesus loved Martha, Jesus loved Mary, and their soon-to-be-famous brother, named Lazarus (you know, the one Jesus raised from the dead!) Anytime Jesus was passing through their village, He would stop to rest, or eat a meal. It was one of his favorite places to hang out. Jesus loved them, and they loved Jesus back.

They believed He was the Son of God, the Messiah they had been waiting for.

After reading this story, while sitting at my kitchen table, I had a question. This is the question I just spoke out loud as the cry of my heart that moment:

Oh Lord Jesus, how can I “sit at your feet” like Martha’s sister Mary, who sat at your feet and heard your word?

I didn’t have to wait but a second and I was given an answer.

I didn’t hear a booming voice. I didn’t hear a still, small voice like Elijah heard up on the mountain. No, I just heard this sentence in my head, Jesus said:

“You’re sitting at my feet right now!”

That’s when I realized I can sit at Jesus’ feet like Mary did anytime, anywhere! Anytime I am reading the Bible, I am sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to His Words. Anytime I cut the TV off, quiet myself down, and just concentrate on Him, I am sitting at His feet. In the mornings I can be sitting at Jesus’ feet while I am still lying flat on my back in bed with my head still on my pillow. I don’t even have to open my eyes! I can whisper “Good Morning, Lord!” I can think about His goodness, or His great love for me…and instantly, it’s like I am sitting at His feet!

All the things Martha was doing were important. But, were they the MOST important? She was not going to have this special opportunity to be near her Lord and Savior Jesus very much longer. He was headed for the cross. He was going to die, and be buried. He would conquer death, hell and the grave by God raising Him back to life. Jesus was on a mission to save the world, yet Martha had this King of all kings, the Lord of Glory, sitting in her living room that day!!!

When we think of it that way, we can agree with Jesus when Martha heard Him say that Mary had made the right choice to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen closely to every Word. Mary had chosen the really good part. She had made the best decision that day. She chose wisely!

A close relationship with Jesus is the very best, most precious thing you and I can ever have. And Jesus said that day, and it’s the same for us today, it will never be taken away!

I choose being with Jesus today!

I encourage you, to sit at His feet too!

Let’s quiet ourselves down, think about Jesus, and sit at His feet right now.

There’s a scripture that says for us to enter His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him and bless His Holy Name.

You can tell Him you appreciate all He has done. You can praise Him in your heart for how great He is. You can ask Him questions, then listen for His answers. He absolutely LOVES having you sit at His feet, sharing thoughts and hearts together.

WAIT: 60 seconds of silence

ASK: Ask if anyone would like to share what they saw or heard while sitting at Jesus’ feet.
